Here at the Horse Camp

At Broken Arrow Horse Camp you can ride right from camp, for a hour or a day, or a week, thru the beautiful Black Hills National Forest. Look for turkey, deer and elk, plus the two llamas, riders came across. Stop at an outlook and enjoy the view. We hope to provide you and your horse or mule with a truly special vacation. Some attractions in the forest are - Custer Mountain, Paha Sapa Trail, Cicero Peak, Custer State Park, Haven Cannon, Beecher Rock, Heaven and many more! Trails

You can choose from the maps which marked trails you would like to ride, choosing moderate (many trails can be rode with no shoes) to challenging (hill climbing)

Riders don't have to stay on the trails, explore and go cross country with ease!

You can plan to ride for an hour or more, most trails are looped so you can explore another area on the way back to camp.

There are also several spots to water your horse.

In the Black Hills, we have spectacular look outs, which are breath taking, check out some our our pictures.

  • Head west to an area where you can ride for hours and have the security of not getting lost, because of perimeter roads.
  • Ride from camp crossing over Custer Mountain to Stockade Lake and Gordon Stockade (fort) in Custer State Park, and take a different loop back.
  • Ride up to Heaven! with a 360 degree breathtaking view and take a different trail back.                     (elevation 6100 ft)
  • Go east to Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park for breakfast or lunch and return thru a pink quartz mine and an open scenic valley.
  • Head to #54, water your horse and climb the hill to the top elevation 5900 ft. getting a grand view of Harney Peak and Crazy Horse, or take the bottom trail thru the forest returning to camp, this is where riders saw 4 bull elk in 2007
  • Scout this trail to Cicero Peak, where there was an old Fire tower look out

 South Dakota requirements:

Western SD Brand Inspection requires a proof of ownership - Brand / Registered Papers / Markings of horse on health certificate

All horses entering South Dakota must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry.   Horses must have a negative Coggins test within 12 months prior to entry. Native horses from North Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana are exempt from the Coggins test requirement.

*New Info-Brand Board*, allows us (Larry and Geri) to issue a (Annual) Travel Permit for each of your horses/mules. This replaces the Brand Inspection, when leaving the West River Area.   Cost $3 per animal.  If you have a liftetime permit, no annual permit is necessary

For you, us, and the next rider after you - You must clean pens daily!   Penalty fee applied
